What's going on?
Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 8:26PM As stated in the new episode, I will be ending the Hey, Shipwreck series with Episode 2-09. Instead, I will be starting a new series simply entitled Tube Daze which will be set on a modern day submarine.
So, you can think of Tube Daze: Season 1 as taking the place of Hey, Shipwreck: Season 3. Tube Daze will be 2-D animated and will also feature two coners standing watch topside trying to stay awake.
However, the Unified Space Navy will live on in a comic entitled XTechnicians, which will be more of a science fiction satire rather than a Navy satire. This will be my first foray into something mainstream targeted at a broad audience. Stand by for updates on that.
Also, I am still writing Join the Navy* and I have received a lot of excited correspondence about it. Please check out the comic strip in the meantime, and stand by for more updates about the film.
The new Season 2 DVD will be available real soon, and I’ll have those Hey, Shipwreck: Season 1 DVD’s back in stock even sooner!
So, to recap, we've got:
1. New cartoon Tube Daze: Season 1 taking the place of Hey, Shipwreck: Season 3
2. New webcomic XTechnicians in development
3. On-going comic strip Join the Navy* based on
4. Join the Navy*, an animated film in development
Questions:
Why the change from future to present day?
I wanted to differentiate my cartoon from the pool of First Person Shooter machinima that is populating the internet (such as Red vs. Blue, This Spartan Life, Spriggs, The Codex, etc.) I often get comments that the series is too similar to these other shows and now I can shake that comparison with a 2-D animated series that is a direct representation of the modern navy.
Why the change from 3-D to 2-D?
Since Join the Navy* will be 2-D animated, I will be able to practice traditional animation principles and attain proficiency with new software by making Tube Daze 2-D animated as well. Plus, I just really love to draw.
Why the sudden interest in producing comics?
I’ve always loved comics, and I’ll be getting to a boat soon. It will be very difficult to work on a cartoon during deployments due to the required computing power, but working on a comic is easily accomplished on a laptop. Plus, I just really love to draw.
I really have to thank John for putting this in my mind!
Why the name change to Tube Daze?
When I finally got stationed back on a submarine base, I found out that everyone referred to the series as “Tube Daze” and not Hey, Shipwreck. So I thought the name change fitting because of that as well as in connection to the series going in a new direction.
When is the recruiting movie coming out?
When it is done! I’ll keep everyone posted on developments, be please be assured this project is very much alive.
